A Mission Statement, Or; In defense of Taste

There is a difference between Style and Taste.

My personal Style (aspiring, at least) consists of a conservative classicism with an urban edge. on a typical day, I wear:
-A pair of skinny fit jeans in either black or blue (no embellishments, no fading (though I am a sucker for raw denim--fading inevitable))
-A pair of monk-straps, oxfords, black leather boots and sometimes Vans
-A basic: either a deep V from American Apparel--great layering pieces/undershirt--or a patterned layering piece in button down or tee shirt (and a graphic tee if I'm feeling sloppy).
-A sweater or cardigan

Mario Batali's personal Style is a pair of orange clogs with the rest of his chef's attire:
-Orange clogs (Crocs)
-A chef's coat
-Shorts or pants

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen bundle themselves up in designer duds to the point where seasons don't matter.

My brother's Style is Jeans and a Tee Shirt with black shoes, pretty much always.

The mother who refuses to grow up (most recently seen on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style--but seen countless more times on What Not to Wear). Both Taste Gurus hit the nail right on the head when they reply to "hot" mom's qualm that, "It's just not me! I don't feel sexy in it," with "You can look sexy without letting your girls hang out!"

What Gunn was referring to there is Taste. There are certainly ways of making cleavage tasteful, hell; there are ways of making underwear tasteful. Taste has to do with the coherence of a look: the right shoes with the right colors with the right fits for your body, all in tune with your age. Taste is about pulling a look off--Not all styles are tasteful.

To come:

-Juxtaposition of Comme Des Garcons (Spring 2008) and Marc Jacobs collection (spring 2008)
-Reviews/ruminations on The Flying Club Cup (Beirut), and In Rainbows (Radiohead)
-Notes about whatever books/movies I find interesting
-Hopefully photos, a Sartorialist-esque endeavor for complete ensembles
